And some more text after the tabs!A recent visitor (JoAnne) posted a nice message to the Spiral Island web site, and took time to show her genuine concern and caring nature about Richie's pets. She asked me whether Richie's beloved pets managed to survive the hurricane that destroyed Spiral Island and devasted much of the Yucatan coast back in 2005. I have sent an email to Richie, and he doesn't get to email that often so it may be a time before I can provide a definite answer, but I am sure Richie would have mentioned if any of his pets did not survive. Richie is a very kind gentle soul, and I am sure his pets safety were his first priority in preparation of the hurricane. Do you have an action plan prepared for your pets well-being before a major storm or hurricane? Pets are a part of the family, and should be treated us such. And pets are very keen to the approach of mother natures fiery and extreme weather, and often become anxious and will be your indicator that a major storm is very close. It's always a good idea to keep your pet(s) close by, and make the same basic precautions for them as for yourself and the rest of your family. Richie Sowa and his beloved pets Thank you! written by JoAnne on July 28, 2006 "As an animal lover and after seeing photos of Richie holding his cats and his dog, I couldn't help but become concerned for them. I sure hope they were able to swim to safety." Pets? written by JoAnne on July 27, 2006 "What happened to Richie's pets? Was he able to get them off the island before the hurricane." An answer to Question: What happened to Richie's pets after the hurricane? written by RandyMac on July 27, 2006 I am not certain what happened to his cat and his ducks, and other pets, but I am sure they survived the hirricane. Most all animals are instinctive to move to a safer place. I will have to email Richie and ask him what happened to his pets. Hurricane Plans for your Pets Hurricanes and major storm and extreme weather are a fact of life in the Yucatan peninsula. Many people take their pets with them on vacation to their holiday destinations especially if they are longer term visitors or part-time residents of the Yucatan peninsula. And it's essential to have a hurricane or major storm plan ready in the event of a hurricane. And part of that plan should include your pets well being and what to do with them to put them in a safer location in the event of a pending hurricane. Richie's beloved cat relaxing in a favorite location in the island palapa Early planning is key, and is as essential as other preparations. If you are in an evacuation zone, remember the following: - Public shelters do not allow pets.
- Make arrangements in advance: contact your local kennel
- Contact your friends who live at higher ground, etc. to watch your pet if you plan to utilize a shelter.
- Do not leave your pet home alone unless there simply is no other alternative.
- Pets left behind stand a good chance of being killed, hurt, or lost if your home is damaged.
- Be sure to include items and foodstuffs for your pets in your hurricane survival kit.
- Don't forget the basics like leashes and litter boxes either.
- Make sure you place vaccination records in with other vital papers to be taken with you, in addition to a recent photo of the pet for identification purposes.
- When you are evacuating with your pet, place your evacuation plans and a phone number in a plastic bag folded small and securely attached to your pets tags.
- A pets identification will become important to your pets retrieval if you become separated during the evacuation.
- If you do not plan to evacuate, bring your pets in early.
- Avoid your pets exposure to windows, etc and never leave your pet outside in a major storm.
If you have no choice but to leave your beloved pets behind, it is always a good idea to separate dogs and cats even if they get along under normal conditions. Animals become disoriented during and after hurricanes. It's a good idea to make sure they are kept in a safe room with minimal chance of encountering flying debris, flooding, etc. Always make sure to leave behind plenty of water, food, blankets and familiar toys with the pets if you are evacuating. Do not use any choke collars, and instead use vinyl or braided collars that will not harm your pet. If you have birds, make sure they kept securely caged with a self feeder securely attached to the cage. ola, Randy hey the hurraaycane really got us,,, and the island is history ,,, on independace day the lines broke and the island drifted close to shore ,,, and was lodged on the bottom ,,,I was asking and affirming for high water when Emily was reported as coming,,, my last personal e mail ,, was from a girl ,,with the e mail address ,,,thewatermarkhigh,,,,,she is in tulum ,, she says it is the name of one of her favorite songs,,,,,, so the water came right up ,, ( I was in chetumal,),, and the rocks gave way (not the island or mangroves,, ) and the island was blown over the marina ,, and up on the beach near romans house,, and the caleta, the bottles were quite confined to one area but it was very messed up with the house like a ball compressed with all the trees much closer together,,, So from the marina offices came the order to send the trash guys over ,,,, trucks and a team ripped it apart,, leaving only part of the base ,,,some nets and ropes ,, the budda carving,,and a few of my song lyrics (which happened to be favorites) so the plan is to with the remnants ,, make a catermarang raft ,, and tow it to the bay of soliman with a dingy that someone is lending me,,,then start again but make it stronger,,,and this time with a team,,,,,,, hope you are well,,,,,,rishi
