In 2000 and 2001, I met many people, and besides Richie Sowa, there were two other people that I became good friends. One was Carlos Yescas, my musician friend from Mexico, who now lives in North Carolina.And the other is the infamous plastic bottle stuffer extraordiare, the late Kenny Coleman, whom I met when I decided to camp my motorhome in Paamul after arriving in the Yucatan, in December 2000.

One day, Kenny, my cousin Keith, my friend Burger McDougall, and I camped out at Yenten beach for some margaritas. Of course I brought my trusty inverter andmy blender along to make the day that much more enjoyable.  The next day we had planned to go over and help Richie, but on this day we were into soaking up the rays, and quaffing margaritas and some puff daddy.

One of Kenny's dreams was to own a convertible car, and go to Thailand, and he was able to live both those dreams. In the spring of 2001, I decided it was time to help Kenny with his dream car, so I set out with the help of Kenny, and we made him ahot Mercedes yellow convertible from his old 1988 gray Ford Taurus four-door. It tok us three weeks and some imagination, and we turned it into one of the hottest cars in Paamul area, even though most people thought Kennywas nuts to let me cut the roof off the old beat up Ford Taurus four-door.

And Kenny decided to fulfill the other dream by selling his place in Paamul and ventured his way to Thailand in the late summer of 2001. Of course, he emailed often and told all about his adventures and that he had found himself not one, but three nice girlfriends who travelled with him all around the country backpacking for the year he was there.

In May 2002, I had received an email from Kenny, learning that he had  just returned to his home base in Wendover from his past years adventures in Thailand. I responded back to him and he invited me down to visit him on the Utah, Nevada border town. I replied to his invitation, and then I waited and waited for him to give me directions, but I never heard from him again.

I received the bad news from Richie Sowa in September 2002, that Kenny Coleman died of a heart attack the day I sent my reply email. He was hiking with some young friends, and died on the hiking trip near his home in Wendover. Richie and Kenny were real good friends, as Kenny had spoend many times helping Richie with his island, and one of his pet tasks was to stuff the bottles under the island with the PVC plastic pole. He was a close friend of mine at Paamul, and we would make the cocktail party circuit together. In the early days at Paamul, the campground was so deserted during the summer months, Kenny would walk around without any cloths on, although that Speedo he wore wasn’t much for cloths. Kenny was a “breatharian,” meaning he believed he could live off of just breathing air, kind of like the bromeliads that grow on the Yucatan. One time Kenny was driving in Playa del Carmen and he hit a taxi with his car, and the taxi flipped over. When the cops showed up Kenny didn’t have his insurance papers on him, and so they threw him in jail. Kenny didn’t seem to care about much, but lucky for him, someone from Paamul had seen the accident and later came to see him in jail. He told them about the insurance papers, and they found them at his place in Paamul, and got him out of jail. Kenny later told me he didn’t mind being in jail, he just figured he would live off the air. In Mexico they don’t feed you in jail, that job is up to the relatives. Paamul just wasn’t the same when Kenny sold his place, and being who he was, he made it a point to not to show up to his going away party. We all had fun at the party, and had a good laugh at his antics. He was missed by all, and I’m sure there are all kinds of wonderful stories about Kenny yet to be told.
